28 Business Tips for Mompreneurs
In spirit of my 28th birthday, I thought I would compile 28 tips for the Mompreneurs. As mompreneurs we are always researching ways to improve our businesses or even tips or tricks to starting a business.
It’s never too late to start a business: I pretty sure that we have all wanted to be entrepreneurs, but we couldn’t get up the courage to give it a try. Well there is no age limit on when you can start a business. All you need is time!
An Idea: It all starts with an idea, this motivation had to derive from somewhere.
Motivation: The only way you are going to want to start a business is if you are motivated to try something new.
Business Planning: A business plan can be one page or 30 pages, it is best to organize your thoughts so that you know which direction you intend to take. Especially if you are needing investors on your team.
What type of business? Who are you are going to be? A bakery, MUA, Childcare Facility, Medical Facility?
What is your business structure? Are you looking into sole proprietorship, Limited Liability Company (LLC), Partnership, etc.
Finding the Funds/You don’t always need money to start a business: Not all businesses cost money! Usually when you are providing such as business consulting or public relations you are able to start the business from little to nothing.
Do your research!: There are so many laws out there that you don’t want to break. Also there are are tons of competitors that you need to set yourself apart from.
Know Your Product: You need to be able to sell your product to a complete stranger and have passion for what you are selling.
Build a rapport: Become knowledgeable about your vendors, customers and other businesses. You want people to remember your business and what you stand for.
Social Media: In this day and age the only way to get in touch with your customers is through their Iphone. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and various other apps are where your customers are.
Don’t be afraid of failure: The only way is up, things will definitely get hard but it is up to you to dust the failure off and try again.
Hiring/Team Building: As a new business you don’t always need to hire a staff. Starting off it can be you and family or a close friend. If you do hire someone make sure that they are reliable and trustworthy.
Customer service is key: It is important to meet the needs of your customers. Make them want to come back and tell their friends about how awesome your company is!
You are your investment: You have to invest in yourself before you expect anyone else to invest in you. Meaning it’s okay to buy that business book or go to that educational MUA seminar, just make sure that you are doing something that will benefit your business.
Branding: You need to set yourself apart, if you are a blogger you need to find the niche that makes you stand out. As a photographer you have to have the best photos and editing software.
Trademark/Copyright: Protect your brand, if you aren’t copyrighted or Trademark someone can steal your work and there will not be repercussions. So do yourself a favor and do your research to protect yourself.
Know your product: Don’t try to sell something that you don’t have a clue of what you’re talking about. If you are selling baby skin products then I need you to be able to tell me everything that is it in it and how wonderful and beneficial it is for my toddler.
Manage your time wisely: You have to make time for your business. I know we get distracted by our day to day life but if you want this entrepreneurial thing to work, then you need to manage your time wisely.
Plan accordingly: Get A Planner! The only way you are going to be successful is if you know what your day to day looks like.
Be Organize: Have a space where you know where everything is and everything has a place. As moms we may live in chaos but we need that chaos to be somewhat organized.
Set Deadlines: If you set a deadline then you won’t procrastinate in getting stuff done. A deadline is good for keeping you on your toes!
Remove Distractions: I know our kids are our biggest motivation, but when it comes down to business we need to limit any distractions. It may be best to work early morning, nap time or even when they are in child care/school. Find time for you to make your dream come true.
It’s okay to make mistakes: If you don’t mistakes how else do you expect to learn from them. Don’t get down on yourself because something didn’t go right, there is always time to make it right.
Minimize debt (no debt): Protecting your credit/ or business credit is important because you shouldn’t break the bank to break even. If you see that you are going into debt then it is time to strengthen your financial plan.
Network Network Network: Go to the events! How do you expect people to know who you are if your not putting yourself out there. Not everyone is going to be on Facebook or Instagram. Go to the events or tell people that you meet about your business.
Monetize your talents: DO NOT give your talents away for free. That college education wasn’t free nor was your product/service you are selling. Do not sell yourself short, if the customer is not willing to buy your product then remember there is another customer that will.
Make it a family affair: If your family works strong together and get along then include them in the product. My husband and daughter are my motivation to succeed and they give me great ideas towards my business. So pick your families brain, this will benefit them in the long run.
