Transformation & Renewal -Work That Body Out

Hey ladies! Welcome to week 2 of my series:

____ is a three week series where we learn tips, techniques, and points for our goal of transformation and renewal. We have three weeks to work on ourselves so we can start off feeling revived and refreshed to take on new projects, businesses, and plans that we may have in the second half of 2018 and the new school year. Ultimately our aim is to pour into ourselves, so we can better pour into others. For us women, we often put self care on the bottom of our to-do list after performing our wifey duties, taking care of our children, running our homes, being the president of the PTA, having 5 businesses and ministries, and taking over the world. No wonder we get burnt out and we are tired all the time! Self care needs to be at the top. How can we be better moms, teachers, managers, leaders, or women if we do not take care of the women in the mirror?

Work that body out.

I love to workout. I love to sweat, I love to feel my muscles burn, I love to feel that healthy sore the next day, and most of all, I love to see the results. Exercising is exciting and every workout is a new adventure. How many sets & reps can I do today? Am I going to able to use more weight on the machines? How many minutes can I do on the stairmaster without stopping? This is all so fun to me. Sometimes it takes me a little while to get to the gym, but after the first 15 minutes, I do not want to go home. I know not everyone is like this. For some, working out hurts (we will get to this later), working out isn’t exciting, and working out just plain sucks. I know this, because I used to think all of that. From time to time, I think those thoughts, but it is important to push through and work that body out.

Imagine a life where we all got our workouts in. We feel so much better emotionally and mentally because the endorphins in our brain are released. We feel so much less stress. Our lungs feel clearer and our body feels freer. We are living a longer and healthier life. Our energy levels are increased so now we can actually do more tasks without feeling so tired all the time. We can play with our kids in the backyard and our sex life with our husband is bomb. Not to mention, we look good. Basically, we live our best life, and exercising has no down side.

Ok, so, we are all busy women. Some of us got kids, some got a hubby at home, some got 2 jobs, some got multiple ministries, and some got all of the above. How do we fit in working out? Do we even need to workout? I know some of you reading this might be at a weight where you do not want to work out, but all of us need to work out. No matter what size you are or how busy you are. You MUST make time to workout. You must schedule time for physical activity. We need to put down our phones, and go to the gym, go in the living room, or go outside (which is my favorite), and move our body. Physical activity is so crucial if we are going to be females bosses.

What I like to do is assess my current body shape and note the things that I want to work on. Currently, I need to pay more attention to my arms. I will definitely be working out my entire body, but I want to add more arm exercises so make sure I am not skipping anything. I try to work out 5 days a week, with one day of the week to be yoga day and the other a rest day. **Thirty minutes a day is bare minimum ladies. The more time of course the better, but if you do not exercise now, aim for at least thirty minutes, then do an increase. The thirty minutes can be used in a jog, a run, doing some push ups, or squats. **Some people mention that they feel TOO sore or too hurt the next day and that is why they do not like to workout. If this is you, that means you do not have the proper form and technique. You are doing the exercise wrong. I would suggest finding a personal trainer, working out with a girlfriend, or asking someone at the gym to make sure you are doing the movements correctly.

I am going to list workouts that I do at home if I can’t make it to the gym and use the machines. These workouts can be found on YouTube so you can see the proper form and technique. Before I do that, I want to note that I usually eat a banana and peanut butter snack before going to the gym. It is important to eat pre workout foods that will boost your blood sugar & get you ready for your sweat game. (Some Pre Workout foods include apple wedges, bananas, peanut butter, protein bars, oatmeal, and dried fruit).

Stand up. Open Arms wide and move them in a circle, clockwise or counter clockwise, again and again.

After  I SWEAT, I got to eat some food. DO NOT starve yourself after working out!! It is so important to have a post workout food plan to feed your muscles that you just worked out. Sample post workout meals include a protein shake, salmon, tuna, yogurt, and chicken. I want to recommend protein powder. You can buy some at your local grocery store or GNC.  It is so easy to get your protein through a protein powder. I usually mix it in with some fruits so it tastes a lot better and then I put ice in it. Yum!

To make working out fun, be sure to try out new exercises. Do not just keep on doing the same movements over again. Switch it up! I would also recommend going to gym classes, ones that cost money or that are free. Gym classes are a great way to learn new exercises, to learn HOW to properly do them, and to make new girlfriends. These female bosses that you meet can become your workout partner.

So now you know the benefits of working out, a beginners guide to start working out, some sample exercises, pre and post workout foods, and additional tips…like the song goes, hey we got a good thing, I wanna see you workout for me, workout for me….but not really, don’t do it for me. Do it for yourself.

Mind, Body,and Soul Series

Hey ladies! Welcome to day 2 of the week 1 of our series:

Meditation

Welcome back ladies! I hope you are all enjoying your first week of getting your spirituality on. How do you feel? Hopeful? Happy?

Today we are focusing on meditation, as part two of our soul transformation. Slow down and take a deep breath. Relax. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat. Now that you are relaxed…let’s begin to meditate on our dive into meditation.

Meditation is the act of “thinking deeply or focusing one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation” (Oxford Dictionary). To reflect is to meditate. To think, contemplate, and consider are forms of meditation as well.

“I am depressed. My life is falling apart. Things are hopeless!!”

The thoughts in our head and what we think of are important. Those thoughts dictate how we behave. Those thoughts dictate how we feel. It is so vital to think good, positive, uplifting thoughts. When you meditate and think of negative slander against yourself, you are creating a world of hopelessness. To meditate and consider the mean words people say to you, you are creating a world of insecurity. Stressing out is meditating on everything going wrong. Thinking negatively will have you start behaving negatively. You WON’T go further with your passions. You WON’T try out that new class. You WON’T even speak up about causes you care about! It is because you are listening to that ugly chatter in your brain telling you that you are not worthy. Instead, let’s begin meditating and being grateful on things that are going right! Trust, we will feel a lot better.

Personally I meditate on scripture verses from the Bible. God’s Word is what keeps me going. I meditate on it day and night (Psalm 1:2). His Word cheers me up, makes me feel loved, motivates me, inspires me, and comforts me. The Word reminds me that things will be OK. I then start to relax. I breathe normally again. I let go. And I am happy despite any chaos that is going on around me.

In the mornings, when you first wake up, start to meditate. Keep a list of affirmations, positive quotes, or bible scripture, and start to repeat them over and over again. Slow down and dissect the phrase and apply it to your daily life. What do you need to trust God about? Where in the workplace do you need to have more courage? Think about that and remember to trust Him and that you are courageous. To be victorious over our day, means being able to grab that list and leave it various places at our job or in our car, so whenever we are down, we can always refer to the list and be lifted back up. Keep meditating whenever you need to.

Focus and dwell on favorable thoughts. Thoughts that are helpful, good, and lovely  (Philippians 4:8). Us ladies got no time for negativity!! We have things to do, people to see, and places to go. Grab those thoughts of insecurity, of hopelessness, of envy, bitterness, and greed, and throw them away forever. These thoughts slow us down, make us weak, and destroy us. Start meditating on encouraging affirmations, Bible scripture, and anything you can find that is positive; and begin to see how your entire life (yes, your family, your marriage, your career, your passions, etc.) changes for the better.

How can we be better moms, teachers, managers, leaders, or women if we do not take care of the women in the mirror?

This week we are focusing on our spirituality.

Spirituality

Let me ask, what is human spirituality and why is it important? I have 3 kids and I take them all to soccer practice, art club, and taekwondo. I have a job and make decent money every year, of course it would be amazing if I am able to make some more. I have bad days here and there, I can lose a couple pounds, my house is a little messy, I do get stressed out a lot, but hey, I’m still breathing right? Aren’t we all on the same boat here?

No, we are not all on the same boat. When the waves get tough, some boats sink and some boats withstand the turbulence but remain strong and defect free. The difference between the two boats is that the first boat does not have a good foundation. It was manufactured wrong with weak materials and it suddenly ruptured. The second boat was made of strong and durable material that lasts, able to go through anything without falling apart. The question is- will you sink or swim?

People that are spiritual are described as “gracious, optimistic, compassionate, and self-actualized”, according to Psychologytoday. To be gracious and compassionate is to be forgiving, empathetic, kind, and merciful. Being optimistic is looking on the bright side. And self-actualized means finding your purpose, your gifts, and your talents.

When life gets tough, how do we react? When someone cuts us off in our lane, do we curse them out and yell at them? Or are we forgiving, letting them go by because maybe they are driving to a hospital to visit a sick loved one. When our own child is sick, do we throw in the towel giving up on all treatments, or do we look on the bright side and thank God that He made medicine? When we feel lost, when we do not know what to do, when we feel hopeless, when we feel insecure, and stressed out- do we figure out how to use our skills to start a new company, to use our time more wisely, and to follow our passions, or do we just give up, call it a day (or even call it a life), and decide that we are going to stay miserable forever.

Being spiritual provides us with a rock solid foundation. As a Christ-follower, whenever I feel like my boat is sinking, I simply call out to God and suddenly, my boat isn’t sinking. I am swimming, I am moving forward, I am reaching my destination and the waves do not consume me. Thank God! He provides that rock solid boat, that even when I feel like I am sinking, I am not really sinking. When I am stressed out because I can’t pay my bills on time or I ran out of ideas for new income streams, I can simply call out to God. He will use my talents, gifts, and skills to point me in the RIGHT direction, instead of me aimlessly trying to figure out life on my own. He is faithful to provide and to guide. That is where our optimism comes in. How can we be optimistic when things go wrong? We usually can’t. Some of us crumble under pressure. With God, we are able to stand tall and have victory over adversity. He works all things together for our good, so even when we feel like it’s a misfortune, we know in the end, it will be for our benefit.

What material boat will you choose? Will you choose the boat that sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor, drowning in worry, stress, hopelessness, and mundanity? Or, will you choose to work on your spirituality, so you can conquer life. Honey, it is important to choose to have some type of spiritual foundation. If not- you will burn out, if you haven’t already at one point in your life. That spiritual dose in your life will provide you rest and rejuvenation. With that rest and revival, you can be gracious towards the people in the parking lot, and YOURSELF. Kind, forgiving, compassionate, loving, optimistic about your own life. Be nice to yourself! You deserve it.  Plus, since YOU’RE good, you can be good to OTHERS, and in return, people will be good TO YOU. And if they aren’t, at least now you know to be forgiving and compassionate, which will make you feel a lot better than being bitter and angry.

Signed,

-A Dear Friend
